Dewar tells farmers agriculture must change

SCOTTISH Secretary Donald Dewar told farmers in the Dumfries and Stewartry areas that it is vital farming is restructured.

Dewar said the reasons for the current situation in farming were several. But he warned that agriculture would have to change.

He said: “I recognise that there will always be an ongoing role for public support for the industry. However, in the light of reform of the common agricultural policy, we must integrate that support with the wider rural development objectives.
