Diet choice benefits

OFFERING a choice of two diet flavours to growers can reduce days to slaughter to 120, saving the average producer selling at 177 days up to 15p/kg.

Mike Baker of MLC Stotfold advised offering two different flavoured diets at a time by dividing hoppers in two.

He cited studies to show that by offering pigs six diets instead of four over the growing period and supplying two of these differently flavoured diets at the same time improved performance.

"This gave pigs a choice of nutrient density and flavour," he said. "The average improvement in feed intakes was close to 100g a day." He claimed that these pigs were now on course to achieve a 90kg slaughter weight at 120 days.
