Disappointment at schemes progress

PROGRESS in the Welsh CAMDA sheep breeding scheme to improve lamb growth and mothering ability of Welsh Mountain sheep over 20 years has been disappointing.

Gains in growth rates are limited while there have been no mothering ability benefits seen in the nucleus flock, said SAC geneticist Ron Lewis.

This is because members have taken individual breeding decisions rather than following a common breeding goal, he said.
