DISTURBING levels of BSE have been uncovered among cattle since the French government began its screening programme, reports the The Daily Telegraph.

Early results of the programme, launched in July, show that up to two cattle in every thousand have tested for the disease.

Eight cases of BSE were discovered among 4-6,000 cattle.

This suggests that official BSE statistics in France have underestimated the extent of the disease.

In France the Figaro newspaper said these results would suggest that 1,200 infected cattle escape detection each year.

So far 42 cases of BSE have been uncovered in France.

British farmers representatives have long claimed France is under-reporting the problem.
