‘Diversify with care’

THE pros and cons of diversification are examined in an aticle in The Herald today (Monday).

Ian Wells, former horticultural adviser with the Scottish Agricultural College, believes diversification is a “question of detailed appraisal of what facilities you have, the terms of land, building, and facilities for other crops or activities”.

Mr Wells warns that farmers should assessment their make a change when considering diversification. They should also assess their technical competence to carry through their aims.

Mr Wells considers diversification schemes such as mushroom and tomato growing and setting up a garden centre. Each sector demands careful thought, he concludes.
