DM cuts laminitis

LAMINITIS risk is reduced when cows are fed high dry matter silage, claimed Dr Murray.

"No feature of the silage accounts for this but it is possible more saliva is needed to digest higher dry matter silage. Evidence suggests that as a result cows naturally buffer this silage better."

Dr Murray said: "Higher protein silage has been blamed for increasing lameness in some studies. But this could be because that silage is wetter. "There is little evidence to suggest that protein plays a part in lameness." &#42
