Dont mix those bought-in ones
THE common belief that mixing bought-in replacements with older ewes before tupping offers advantages is misplaced, says Lesley Stubbings.
All it did was to leave the flock open to sheep scab, orf, foot rot and lice. Ms Stubbings advised producers to quarantine bought-in replacements for 48 hours and keep them separate from the rest of the flock for as long as it was possible.
Such stock should be wormed with a non-white drench on arrival, and given a clostridial vaccination. *
