Duke tells troubled farmers not to soldier on

THE Duke of Buccleuch told a centenary reception for the Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution there were farmers who should be dissuaded from soldiering on instead of being allowed to dig a deeper hole for themselves.

Meanwhile, Mark Shucksmith, of Aberdeen University, the author of several studies of rural Scotland, predicted the numbers needing help would rise significantly over the next 10 years.
