Dutch abattoir sends spinal cord again

By FWi staff

BANNED spinal cord has been discovered in a consignment of beef from the same Dutch abattoir for the second time within a week.

An 8cm piece of the material, believed to have the greatest risk of carrying BSE, was found in an imported forequarter at Blackpool Abattoirs, Blackpool.

It came in a batch of 53 forequarters from Bradas Vleeschbedrijf BV abattoir in Leeuwarden, Holland.

Last week another piece of beef from the same abattoir was discovered in a consignment of beef at Eastbourne.

A spokesman for the Food Standards Agency said he expected the Dutch authorities to take steps to ensure there was no repeat of this.

Meanwhile, the National Farmers Union and the Ulster Farmers Union have called for a ban on imports of German beef after a series of similar discoveries.
