Dwarf in fast lane
FAST growing dwarf wheats are expected to produce yields of almost 40t/ha (16t/acre) under special growing conditions in space, according to recent work at Utah State University in the USA.
Named Apogee, the novel variety grows to just 46cm (18in), has few tillers and matures a week faster than normal strains, reports The Independent newspaper. The variety is part of a 15-year project to help space travellers become self-sufficient. *
