Early hay and straw auction

EXCEPTIONAL demand for hay and straw has led to auctioneers Dreweatt Neate holding an early auction.

The company has regularly auctioned hay and straw off farms in southern England for about 50 years, but usually in the winter.

This summers drought has significantly increased the demand for forage, say the auctioneers. With farmers already using their winter stocks, the firm had decided to hold an early sale to meet the demand.

Partner Simon Pallett said: "There is market evidence of hay selling for £4-£6 a bale for small bales, which is at least double the usual price."

The sale will be held in Newbury on Thurs, Oct 26.
