EBVs are best selection tool

OVER three generations, 87% of your herd genetics accounted for bulls, stated US cattle rancher Lee Leachman.

Mr Leachman who runs 2000 suckler cows across 24,300ha (60,000-acres) at Montana, said the best tool to select the right genetics was the estimated breeding value (EBV) for it objectively compares stock.

Estimates from the University of Georgia, US, place EBVs as being nine times more accurate than just using simple adjusted weights and ratios. "Even when they fail, you are still going to win the race more often than if using historical measures," he said.
