SALES of intervention barley stocks have started, at very low prices, but with no export refund offered – a sign that the European Commission does not expect a recovery in world barley prices, according to the Home Grown Cereals Authority.

In the past week, 230,000 tonnes was sold from German, Irish and Swedish stores at Ecu50-60/  t (£33-40/ t)

And in the same week, 250,000 tonnes of German wheat was up for sale – which, with the prospect of a large EU-wide harvest – could depress EU wheat prices further.
