Effluent warning

TAKE care with silage effluent, warns the Environment Agency.

The EAs Geoff Bateman urges silage makers to ensure silos and effluent tanks are in good condition and to wilt silage to over 25% dry matter when possible. He also advises checking effluent channels each day and emptying effluent tanks regularly, especially in the first few days after clamping.

SILAGE effluent production could be high in crops cut over the next few weeks if rain continues, and special care will be needed to avoid pollution this year, says the Environment Agency.

It advises checking silage clamps and tanks to ensure they are safe and when possible wilting grass for silage to over 25% dry matter. After clamping, check effluent channels stay clear and ensure there is spare capacity in tanks to prevent overflows.
