Englands lost acres

ENGLAND lost about 6700ha (16,549 acres) of farmland to urban development in 1991, according to figures released this week by the Department of the Environment.

They also show that more than a third of land developed for urban uses in 1991 was previously used for agriculture. But preliminary results for 1993 suggest developers are now making more use of vacant urban land for housing. &#42
