Ensiling checklist

FORAGE crops must be ensiled rapidly and compacted well to achieve an immediate anaerobic environment, says Dr Tim Keady, from the Hillsborough Research Institute, Northern Ireland.

He suggests:

&#8226 Checking the silo for leaks and sealing these where necessary.

&#8226 Ensiling the crop clean, free from soil and slurry.

&#8226 Securing an effective seal by using separate plastic sheets which come 50% down each silo wall.

&#8226 Filling the pit as rapidly as possible.
