EU cereals may top 200m tonnes
CEREALS production for the 15 EU member states may exceed 200 million tonnes in the 2000/01 season, farm lobby COPA/COGECA has announced.
“Taking that average yields in 2000/2001 will be comparable to 1999, EU cereals production in the coming year might exceed 200m tonnes,” COPA/COGECA said in a statement.
The group estimates the total cereals area in 1999/2000 at 37m hectares. This is an increase of 2% on the previous year.
Last autumn COPA estimated an EU grain crop of 199m tonnes in 1999/2000.
