EU faces bonemeal mountain

A BAN by European supermarkets on using animal remains as animal feeds has produced a growing mountain of meat and bonemeal (MBM).

Britain alone has 300,000-tonne stockpile of the banned feed following its 10-year-old ban on the material.

The European Renderers Association fears the MBM mountain could create environmental problems as well as a headache for the rendering industry.

It claims that MBM can be safely fed to pigs, poultry and fish, despite widespread consumer concerns that feeding animal remains to other animals is unethical and represents a potential health hazard.
