EU lifts threat to hedgerows

FARMERS have won the right to continue claiming EU subsidies for hedgerows and other field margins, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Brussels had threatened to withdraw subsidies for these havens for wildlife under the arable area payments scheme.
Angry farmers said they would be forced to rip up hedges to cut losses if this was introduced.
But on Sunday (19 November) it was announced that EU farming commissioner Franz Fischler had agreed to protect the status of margins more than two metres wide.
This followed talks with farm minister Nick Brown.
