Europe approves US abattoirs
THE European Commission has removed the possibility of a block on all US beef by publishing a list of US abattoirs eligible to export to the European Union (EU).
In January, EU veterinary officials gave temporary approval for a list containing 100 slaughterhouses, saying they would review the situation in three months.
But the Commission has decided to approve a new list after inspections found hygiene standards were satisfactory.
The EU Standing Veterinary Committee had first questioned testing procedures at some US plants.
It found the plants were not able to adequately safeguard against the potentially harmful residues of antibiotics in meat.
These concerns threatened a block on all US imports.
