THE European Union has been given 15 months to comply with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruling on its beef hormone ban rather than the four year period it had been hoping for.

A WTO arbitrator found in favour of the United States, after US officials complained that the EUs request for 21/2 years to carry out a scientific assessment and up to another two years to implement legislative changes was excessive.

Last February, the WTO ruled that the EU had not provided scientific justification for the ban which it imposed in 1989.

This means Europes import ban should be lifted immediately, according to US officials. But the EU has in the past been able to maintain the ban by insisting on further scientific research into the possible harmful effects of hormones in beef.
