‘Europeans know more about GMs than Americans’

EUROPEANS are not biased against genetically modified (GM) products because of scientific ignorance, according to new research.

The research, by the London School of Economics, found that Europeans were more scientifically literate than their US counterparts.

The Herald reports that the National Farmers Union of Scotland has reserved judgement as to whether GM crops have a part to play in Scottish agriculture.

The issue was debated at a council meeting. One contributor expressed the view that there was a “climate of suspicion” among the public about the issue following the BSE crisis. Another said the public needed to be educated about the facts
