Extent of eelworm snags overlooked

THE full consequences of potato eelworm infection may have been overlooked, according to recent ADAS studies.

They show that the pest leads to more volunteers.

Harvest losses are the main cause of volunteers, said ADAS crop consultant David Turley.

A key finding of the trial was that under an integrated approach at one Herefordshire site PCN reduced crop bulking, so leaving more small tubers to slip through the harvester web.

"Its probably not been thought about much in the past," he commented.
