THE Pork Product of the Year Awards, organised by the ML, have attracted a record entry of 329 products from 106 manufacturers. The three categories of award – retail, catering and healthy eating – carry a total prize money of £50,000.

ALAN Stewart, formerly of SAC, is the new pig specialist at Harper Adams. The college is currently updating its pig facilities.

A SALMONELLA vaccine launched by Hoechst is designed to eliminate S enteritidis in broiler breeding stock. Salenvac is recommended for injection at 12 weeks and 16 weeks at under 25p a bird.

OSTEOPOROSIS in laying hens starts before birds begin to lay, and is not a result of the housing system for the hen.

Evidence comes from research at the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh.

Dr Barry Thorp advised egg producers to house pullets in their laying accommodation four weeks before the onset of lay, and to offer a high calcium feed two weeks before lay.
