Farm accident death toll
THERE were 26 fatal accidents on farms between March and September 1998 compared to 27 for the same period in 1997, according to provisional figures released by the Health and Safety Executive.
But over the year Apr 97-Mar 98 a total of 48 people were fatally injured, of which 10 were members of the general public. Deaths in agriculture are second only to the construction and manufacturing industries.
Announcing the figures the HSE said it intended to publish half yearly statistics from now on in recognition of public interest in deaths occurring in the work place.
