Farm minister stands down

FRENCH farm minister, Jean Glavany, stood down from his post this week to concentrate on helping prime minister, Lionel Jospin, in his quest to become the next president.

Presidential elections are to be held in May and it has been long-expected that Mr Glavany would relinquish his agricultural responsibilities.

Mr Glavany is being replaced by Francois Patriat, socialist secretary of state for commerce. But, while there will be a new face in the French agriculture ministry, observers do not anticipate any change of policy. &#42
