Farm visit target upped
WELCOME to the countryside, the NFUs initiative to invite the public on to farms, aims to attract more visitors this year than the 40,000 achieved in 1996.
A survey last year showed that almost 80% said their understanding of farming had improved significantly after visiting one of the 250 participating farms.
Full plans for the 1997 campaign will be announced in the spring. But NFU leader Sir David Naish said the aim would be to encourage an even greater number of people, particularly those from towns and inner cities, to visit a farm.
"The welcome to the countryside campaign continues to go from strength to strength,"stressed Sir David.
with more and more people discovering for themselves how farm animals are cared for and how food is produced from farm to plate.
"The NFU will be building on the achievements so far with an extended programme of events for 1997 to enable everyone across England and Wales to reach an open farm in their region," said Sir David.
