BURY ST EDMUNDS market could be saved, following a meeting of East Anglian farmers this week.

The “make-or-break” meeting on Wednesday (9 December) resulted in a group of more than 100 people pledging to keep the current market site running for now.

In the meantime, the group will seek planning permission for a new market at Stanton, 12 miles north-east of Bury.

Closure of the historic town market was planned for 16 December – next Wednesday.

Peter Crichton, consultant to the group, said that each member would contribute a minimum subscription of £500.

This will entitle them to shares to this value – and voting rights – in a new company, Anglian Farmers Market Ltd.

The market will remain on its existing site until the new site is completed, possibly within nine months.
