Farmers blamed for drop in birds

THE numbers of five species of British birds have plummeted within the past 12 months, according to new figures.

The tree sparrow, the bullfinch, the grey partridge, the linnet and the cuckoo have fallen by a third in the past year, says the British Trust for Ornithology.

The trust and the RSPB consider greater dependence on intensive farming techniques is to blame.
