Farmers to blame for floods
By FWi staff
FARMERS, not global warming, are to blame for floods devastating Britain, claims an environmental expert.
Dr John Boardman, head of the Environmental Change Institute in Oxford, lays the blame for much flooding on producers who drill winter wheat.
Writing in The Guardian, he says run-off from fields prepared or drilled with winter varieties is the cause of many cases of flooding.
He accuses farmers of gambling whether heavy rains will occur after drilling, and if they lose, householders suffer.
He insists: “We cannot blame the climate.”
