Farming flood claims pour in

NFU Mutual said it had already received claims running into several million pounds because of bad weather over Easter.

The main farm insurance company said they were mostly for damaged caused by floodwater pouring through farmhouses and through farm buildings, destroying machinery and crops in storage.

Some farmers could do nothing as livestock was swept away. Some vegetable growers lost their entire crops.

Ian Bowers, who farms in Northamptonshire, lost 180 ewes drowned by rising waters from the River Nene. He will claim about £10,000.
