Farming wins crop of New Year honours

JOHN Krebs, the scientist responsible for devising the governments field research project to assess the link between badgers and bovine tuberculosis, was knighted in the New Year honours list.

Prof Krebs, chief executive of the Natural Environment Research Council was recognised for his contribution to behavioural ecology.

Royal Victorian Medal, (Silver), B Ambrose, tractor driver, Crown Estate, Windsor.

CBE Margaret Charrington, chairman of Horticultural Research Council, for services to horticultural research; Prof R Flavell, lately director of the John Innes centre, for services to plant and microbiological science; W Macgregor, lately chief agriculture officer, Scottish Office; A Smith, chairman of Lincolnshire Trust for Nature Conservation for services to nature conservation.
