FAWC begins study of welfare at marts

THE Farm Animal Welfare Committee has begun a review of the welfare of animals at livestock markets.

FAWC, which advises the government on animal welfare, has not studied the topic since the mid-1980s and now wants to re-assess welfare issues associated, for example, with developments in market design and livestock handling systems.

Other issues for review will include stock loading and unloading, drover training and competency and the time animals spend in the markets. &#42
