Feed quality check

LIVESTOCK producers can now check whether bought-in feeds are contaminated and over-processed as well as analyse them for nutritional quality.

Leics-based Farmlab says use of a microscope allows its new service to identify the individual sources of protein, oil, fibre and ash in feeds, and any bacterial or parasitic contamination.

Technical director Mark Harrison says results from a German microscopy study showed that 10% of soyabean samples were contaminated with thorn apple seeds. Some soyabean samples also contained impurities or were over-processed.

The service, to be known as SCOPE, will be launched at this years European Dairy Farming Event – dont miss our pull-out supplement next week. &#42
