Fertiliser firm fined £370,000 for kicking up a stink


ANIMAL by-products firm Smith Bros, of Hyde, Cheshire, was fined £370,000 by Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, for creating a stink in a residential area.

The firm, which turned animal waste into fertiliser, spewed fumes from its plant making local people sick.

It admitted 22 breaches of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The company is now in the hands of liquidators.
