HARVEST has started and as the winter barley comes off the field both merchant and manufacturer are hoping this will stimulate the current quiet fertiliser market.

The major companies remain firm with their July ammonium nitrate price of £87/t, rising roughly by £1/month through to Christmas.

Undoubtedly some merchants will be offering deals below these prices, albeit few. These are as yet unsupported by the manufacturer, so the standoff or stalemate continues.

Orders are currently only half or two thirds of last years levels with movement even lower.

But business is picking up which must start to beg the question whether production will continue flat out at all the sites of the three majors.

Interest continues in imported granular urea at £95/t in bags on farm delivered but all the early bargains in imported AN have now disappeared leaving modest tonnages at about £77/t for December/January delivery.

Contracts are for payment in March at a price which in itself is also a bargain.

With the first signs of activity in the autumn market PK prices remain firm at £118-120/t.

Early indications are that volumes in this market will also be lower than last season as farmers see a PK holiday as a way to further reduce costs.

If early reports about harvest are true and crops this year are indeed thin, then the investment in autumn fertiliser could be thinner still.
