Fighting threatens Philippines harvest

PHILIPPINES corn output is likely to fall by 30% this year as a result of fighting between government troops and Muslim rebels.

If clashes continue in Mindanao island, overall food supplies could be adversely affected, say government officials.

An estimated 60,000 tonnes – worth US$8.7 million (5.8m) – has already been lost as the conflict has prevented farmers from planting, reports the Financial Times.

Hundreds of soldiers and rebels have been killed and 350,000 people, mostly poor farmers, displaced.
