Financial lifeline

THE Department for Environ-ment, Food and Rural Affairs has thrown a lifeline to suckler producers whose herds have been wiped out by foot-and-mouth or affected by movement restrictions.

Under EU legislation, it is possible to waive the rule that producers must use 90% of their suckler cow premium scheme quota, or face having it withdrawn permanently without compensation.

The department says it will implement the rule as flexibly as possible to help affected farms.

All producers can make claims from July 1 until Dec 6, 2001. &#42
