First crop to be harvested

HARVESTING of forage maize on one of the farmers weekly/Coop de Pau-monitored sites took place last week.

Owner of the Crediton site, Bill Blake, said the crop, harvested at 32.1% DM, had yielded as well as last year and that the quality was excellent.

James Woodbridge, of Coop de Paus UK agents, Grainseed, expects most of the sites to be harvested within the next 10 days. "Dumfries and Driffield will be the exceptions," he says.

The Winchester site should be next and contractors are lined up to harvest the crop on Wednesday at a target DM of 35%.

Of the seven sites, crop performance at Carmarthen, the highest above sea level, has been the biggest surprise so far, with DMs consistently above average.
