First for forage
MILK from forage has risen from nine to 13 litres a cow in Tegwyn Daviess 180-cow herd of Holstein Friesians at 155ha (383-acre) Caeremlyn Farm, Henllan Amgoed, Whitland, Dyfed, this year. Such a result helped him secure the championship in the BOCM Pauls annual forage competition.
Mr Davies, who farms with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Eirian, believes the silages high dry matter helped it preserve well and made it palatable. The winning sample analysed at 34.7% DM, 12.6% crude protein, 11.8 ME, 7.9 FME, 74 D-value and 3.8 pH. *
