First Milk price cut

FIRST Milk has cut its May milk price by 0.35p/litre due to weak markets and the big spring flush.

This takes the value of a farmers weekly standard litre (4.1% butterfat, 3.3% protein, top hygiene bands, 1501 litres a day) to 15.95p.

The move follows a cut of 1-1.8p/litre depending on area in April, though the worst may be over.

"We have tried to spread the pain of lower prices over several months, rather than calculate them for a specific month," said spokesman Jonathan Horrell.

"We have dealt with the worst of the spring peak, but that doesnt mean prices will jump back up. But it takes away the risk of a continued worsening of the price, too." &#42
