A PACKED ring set a fast trade at Cooper and Tanners milk quota leasing auction at Frome market on 19 December.
Over 1.2m litres were moved, averaging 1.5ppl – 1p up on Novembers auction.
But it was the top price of 1.9ppl for a 4.11% butterfat that surprised the Somerset-based chartered surveyor.
“We didnt quite hit the 2p mark on the day, but managed to achieve it just the day after,” said the companys Chris Eden.
“We have leased more quota than ever before this year; demand has been extremely strong.”
Auctioneer Chris Reeks explained: “With many purchasers not issuing milk cheques to producers with insufficient quota to cover their production, many farmers simply have to lease in or buy quota to secure their monthly milk cheque.
“This obviously generates demand.”
