Food agency appointments slammed

THE new Food Standards Agency has been dismissed as a “dogs dinner” of people which is too close to the food industry.
Consumers reacted reached with dismay to the announcement of the remaining eight members of the FSA board on Friday (3 March).
The board includes tenant farmer Karol Bailey, professor of Human Nutrition Jeya Henry, and chef Robert Rees.
Sue Davies, principal policy adviser at the Consumers Association, said: “We are absolutely astounded and flabbergasted at the announcement.”
She described the appointments as a “a dogs dinner of a Board made up of the great and the good rather than of food and consumer expertise.
“We have been campaigning for over 10 years for a Food Standards Agency that will put consumer interests at the heart of food policy. It must not fall apart.”
Ms Davies said the appointment of industry representatives went against the governments intention not to appoint representatives from the food industry.
It looks like the agency will suffer from an inherent conflict of interest before its work has even begun, she added.
Other appointments included Richard Ayre, former deputy chief executive of BBC News, and Valerie Howarth, chief executive of the charity Childline.
