Food chain stability

NEED for stability throughout the food chain was a theme developed by the MLCs head of industry strategy, Martin Palmer.

"Pig producers, for example, must use their current windfall profits to get away from the boom-bust bandwagon, and to get on more steady paths," he said.

"Throughout the livestock industry there will be a trend towards greater co-ordination in production, processing and marketing of food."

More partnerships will result from the supermarkets increasingly demanding a consistent, safe, quality product at a competitive price, he suggested.

Farm assurance schemes had an important role to play. &#42

Opportunities exist for regionally-diffrentiated and value-added products, says Martin Palmer.
