Four B&W bulls top 2000gns at breeders sale
By Jeremy Hunt
TAKING account of the economic climate within the dairy industry, there was a decent trade for black-and-white stock bulls at the Border Counties Holstein Friesian Breeders Clubs annual evening show and sale at Carlisle.
The breeding on offer was described by auctioneer Edward Brown as "quite superb" and the catalogue of 125 bulls drew a capacity crowd to Borderway Mart. But trading was patchy, particularly for the older bulls.
"Based on the situation farming is facing at the moment the outcome was very satisfactory with four bulls over 2000gns and 16 over 1500gns," said Mr Brown.
Buyers were found for 68 bulls to average £1110 and although Holstein blood prevailed throughout, it was one of a string of stylish young sires from Willie and Eileen Bells British Friesian herd that finished on top at 2600gns.
The seven bulls from Mr and Mrs Bells Marshside herd at Kirkbride, Carlisle were all sold and achieved the top two prices.
Sale topper was Marshside Jaguar 3rd, by Marshside Roulette and out of a dam by Marshside Performer 4th with three out of four lactations over 9000kg. He heads for Alexandria, Dunbar with W and R Murdoch.
Marshside Drummer, a bull bred from one of the Marshside herds highest yielding cows, met a spirited spate of bidding to be finally taken by G Somerville and Son, Castle Douglas, at 2200gns. This June 1997-bred bull is by Marshside Roulette and boasts the Sharcombe Brigadier sired Marshside Daphne as maternal granddam.
The Bells also received 2000gns from T W and A M Moscrop and Son, Carlisle, for Marshside Deluxe, another by Roulette and tracing back to Daphne.
At the same money J E Archer and Sons (Farmers) Ltd, sold their pure Friesian bull Collycroft Latin to Messrs T Hetherington, Penrith. This Sharcombe Beta son is out of a Lavenham Gainsborough dam.
Fashionable Holstein breeding came to the fore with a son of Fatal from the Davies familys Gornal consignment from mid-Wales. Gornal Black Bell (PIN +£138 ITEM +£140) was the highest PIN bull born in the UK last year.
