French demands

FRANCE is demanding EU compensation if it is to stop its farmers destroying food imports from Spain.

In a statement in Brussels this week, the French government blamed the current agri-monetary situation for its loss of competitiveness and the recent attacks on Spanish cargos.

It believes its farmers should be compensated for having to face cheaper imports of lamb from the UK and fruit and vegetables from Spain.

But EU farm commissioner Franz Fischler has warned French farm minister Phillipe Vasseur that, if he does not come up with an action plan soon to stop his farmers destroying imports, the matter will end up in court.
