FSA decision criticised

THERE has been widespread criticism of the governments decision not to introduce a food standards agency during the next parliamentary session.

But, following the Queens speech this week outlining the governments legislative plans for the coming year, farm minister Nick Brown insisted that ministers would continue "taking forward proposals" and that a Bill would eventually be published.

The NFU, a long-time supporter of the FSA concept, was disappointed that the legislation was not being pursued.

The British Retail Consortium, too, insisted there remained a need for "radical reform of the way in which government deals with food issues". And it challenged government to set a clear timetable for legislation.
