Garlic helps piglets on to solids

PIGS whose food is dosed with garlic could help their piglets through the trauma of weaning, says scientist John Day, of the ADAS centre near Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

The familiar taste of garlic, acquired through their mothers milk, would help piglets to eat solid food, as long as it had the same strong taste, says Dr Day.

Dr Day has evidence that the technique works in rats and is now looking for funding to try it with pigs.

He will present his research at next weeks meeting of the British Society for Animal Science in Scarborough.
