NORTHERN Irelands lamb market went into a spin last week following the news that other parts of the UK would be allowed to export lamb meat again.

After weeks of steady gains, prices had reached 3/kg deadweight in the Province, nearly double prices in Great Britain.

However, Northern Irelands lamb market was rocked by the standing veterinary committees decision in Brussels last week to allow exports from foot-and-mouth free counties.

This sent prices on a downward trend, with reports of a sharp drop to the 2.50/kg mark by the end of last week.

It is thought Irish lambs might lose out in some Continental markets. But demand is likely to remain strong in mainland Europe as the Muslim festival of Ramadan starts soon.
