German pork prices to stay low in 1999

GERMAN pork prices will stay low in 1999 in spite of a small increase in consumption, the countrys agriculture ministry said.

Pig slaughterings this year will rise 1.7% to 40 million, compared with a rise of 5% to 39.4m last year.

The German ministry said the outlook for the European market remained difficult.

The German livestock count showed there were 26.3m pigs in November 1998, 6% more than at the same time in 1997.
